As your child grows, every new milestone is exciting—especially when it comes to their smile. Those first baby teeth make way for solid foods, and before you know it, your child is starting to lose teeth and grow their permanent set. But how can you keep track of when those adult teeth should come in?

At Greater Houston Pediatric Dentistry, we’re here to guide you through every stage of your child’s oral development, from their first baby tooth to their full set of permanent teeth.

When Should My Child See a Pediatric Dentist?

Did you know your baby’s teeth start forming before birth?

That’s why the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and our own pediatric dentists recommend that your child see a dentist by the age of 1 or within six months of their first tooth erupting. To support early care, Greater Houston Pediatric Dentistry offers free infant dental exams at all four of our locations in Katy, Conroe, Memorial City/Bunker Hill, and Humble.

Early dental visits help establish a “dental home” for your child—ensuring consistent care, developmental monitoring, and support for you as a parent.

If your child has their first tooth but hasn’t yet seen a dentist, it’s the perfect time to schedule a free infant dental exam in Houston at Greater Houston Pediatric Dentistry. We’re proud to offer this complimentary visit for infants under one year old as part of our commitment to early preventive care.

Understanding the Permanent Teeth Eruption Timeline

Most children begin losing their baby teeth around age 6, and this transition to permanent teeth usually continues until around age 12 or 13. Here's a general timeline for when adult teeth come in:

Typical Eruption Timeline for Permanent Teeth

  • 6–7 years: First molars (also called “six-year molars”) and lower central incisors

  • 7–8 years: Upper central and lateral incisors

  • 9–12 years: Canines and premolars

  • 11–13 years: Second molars

  • 17–21 years: Third molars (wisdom teeth), if they erupt at all

🦷 Baby teeth usually fall out in the same order they appeared.

If the eruption of your child’s permanent teeth appears to be delayed, a pediatric dentist can use dental X-rays to see what is happening underneath your child’s gums and help determine whether your child has crowding problems, impacted teeth, or any other issues that are preventing proper eruption.

Should My Child Get Dental Sealants on Permanent Teeth?

Dental Sealants are one of the most common preventative dental procedures performed today. According to the Cleveland Clinic, approximately 42% of US children aged 6 to 11 have dental sealants on their adult teeth.

Dental Sealants are a thin, liquid coating that the dentist will paint onto the chewing surfaces of your premolars and molars. Once applied, the dentist will cure and harden the sealant material to protect your teeth from harmful bacteria that can cause cavities.

Typically, children should receive sealants on their permanent molars and premolars as soon as these teeth erupt. This way, the dental sealants can protect their teeth through the cavity-prone years (ages 6 through 14).

Why Preventive Pediatric Dental Care Matters

At Greater Houston Pediatric Dentistry, preventive care can help children avoid potential dental and oral health conditions. Maintain a schedule of bringing your child to the dentist every six months for treatment provided by your dentist to help your child maintain healthy teeth and gums. Treatment is intended to prevent oral disease and any other dental problems that may arise without proper care.
